Summertime is a great time to get away to New Smyrna Beach. Ideal water temperatures, daily sunshine, and many summer in Florida activities await. Whether you hope to spend your time on land or sea during your summer escape, there’s something to keep you occupied.

Canal Street Cruise In

Held every second Saturday of the month, no matter the season, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., the Canal Street Cruise fills New Smyrna Beach’s historic Canal Street with muscle cars, street rods, cruisers, custom, and classic cars and motorcycles of all kinds. There have been up to 500 vehicles seen at some events. There is a DJ and the businesses along Canal Street remain open for shopping.

Sea Dogs Dive Center

You won’t be 20,000 leagues under the sea, but you’ll go down to as much as 80 fsw (feet saltwater) when you take on an undersea adventure with Sea Dogs Dive Center SCUBA diving. There is a variety of diving experiences to choose from, for the novice all the way up to the expert. Explore undersea wreckage or admire beautiful reefs. You can even choose to go for a nighttime dive! Non-divers or bubble watchers are welcome for a small fee, space permitting. Sea Dogs also allows spearfishing (and offer lessons) with a license and offers lobster hunting during lobster season.

Beach

Summer in Florida is the perfect time for playing in the waves, strolling the beach, or laying out and relaxing while working on your tan. Pack up your cooler and snacks, grab your beach gear, and head down to the sand for the day and find fun summer activities in Florida. You can splash around in the water on your own or rent gear for snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and more.

Daytona Tortugas

If a trip to Miami to watch the Marlins isn’t in your itinerary, you can still see a game during your stay in New Smyrna Beach. The Daytona Tortugas are a Class A minor league team that plays at Jackie Robinson Stadium in nearby Daytona. The team is an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds MLB team. Aspiring players or fans that want an up-close experience can inquire about the team’s on-field batting practice experience. The 90-minute session includes all equipment needed for a great time.

Jimmy Lane Surfing Academy

For some different fun in the water, catch a wave and surf the waves of the Atlantic. The surf school offers lessons, as well as gear rentals. Family owned and operated, professional surfer Jimmy Lane and his staff will work with both novice and advanced surfers for fun in the summer sun of Florida.

Turtle Mound River Tours

If you’ve had your dose of in-water fun, head back to your rental and shower off the sand and salt and keep the water fun going on the water. Turtle Mound River Tours offers unique, narrated scenic two-hour boat tours of the Indian River Lagoon. You and your group can kick back for a sunset tour, private tour, or small group tour where you might see dolphins and manatees. There’s a stunning view of the Canaveral National Seashore you’ll see along the way. They also offer a ‘family fun fishing adventure.’

Blue Voodoo Outfitters

The only bad luck you might have with Blue Voodoo Outfitters is not coming home with a catch of the day. Blue Voodoo Outfitters is a New Smyrna Beach-based company offering fishing charters to many great fishing spots. They offer shallow and fly fishing, inshore, near shore, and will even take you out to sea to the beautiful reefs and fascinating undersea wreckage for an unforgettable deep-sea fishing experience. Depending on the experience you choose, pack all you’ll need for a half-day trip, three quarter-day trip, or full-day trip.

Disappearing Island

There are countless islands dotting the waters around Florida, but not many that disappear and reappear as the tide changes. The aptly named Disappearing Island is located at Ponce Inlet and is only available by watercraft during low tide. The island is a popular place for boaters, and locals and visitors alike will pack up beach gear, grills, and picnics and set their sights on the island. Some companies offer tours, including jet ski tours, that stop at the island. In accordance with Florida law, patrons born after January 1, 1988 will need to acquire a temporary Florida boating permit before piloting the jet ski.

Stand Up Paddle Board

A water adventure and a workout at the same time? Stand up paddleboard (SUP) is a great way to get outside, get in the water, and get a workout at all at once. Many companies in and around New Smyrna Beach offer SUP tours and guided experiences and some have even designed yoga or workout routines done on the board. Take a lesson, or if you’re confident with your skills, many beach gear rental companies will rent all the equipment you’ll need to create your own SUP adventure.
